Birth & Early Life

Neeraj Chopra was born on 24th December 1997 in Haryana, India. His father Satish Kumar is a farmer and his mother Saroj Devi is a homemaker. As a 13-year-old boy, he was obese and his family enrolled him in a gym in Panipat. He used to run to shed weight but didn’t enjoy hit. He got interested in Javelin after watching Jaiveer of Binjhol, a professional javelin thrower. He began training with Jaiveer. Later when he was 14 years old, he shifted to a sports nursery in Panchkula and trained with national-level athletes. In 2012, he won his first junior national gold in Lucknow.

Career

In 2016, 19-year-old Neeraj made a Junior World Record throw of 86.48m at the World U-20 Championships, Poland. In 2017, he claimed the title at the Asian Championship, Bhubaneswar. In the same year, he came 7th in the IAAF Diamond League. In the following year, he claimed the silver medal at the Offenburg Speerwurf Meeting, Germany. He also clinched the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Australia.

The Haryana thrower bagged 3 more gold medals that year at the Sottevile Athletics Meet, France, Savo Games, Finland, and the Asian Games, Jakarta. In 2020, Neeraj finished third at the Kourtane Games, Finland. This achievement qualified him for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Neeraj reached the finals of the Tokyo Olympics events.

In the final round of the Tokyo Olympic 2020 Event, Neeraj Chopra leads the board with the score of first attempt 87.03 then in the second attempt 87.58, and in third attempt 76.79 meters. And With this score, he won the first gold medal of the Tokyo Olympic 2020 for India. Neeraj became the first-ever athlete representing India in 100 years to win an Olympic medal in track and field when he lines up in the javelin throw event at Tokyo Olympic 2020.
