Birth And Early Life

Deepika Kumari was born on 13th June 1994 in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Her father is an auto-rickshaw driver and her mother is a nurse at Ranchi Medical College. As a child, Deepika used to aim stones to pick mangoes. This ignited her dream of becoming an archer. However, her parents had a difficult time supporting her dream financially. As a result, Deepika practiced archery using homemade bamboo bows and arrows. Her cousin Vidya Kumari, a student of Tata Archery A.

In 2005, Deepika joined Arjun Archery Academy and a year later transferred to Tata Archery Academy, Jamshedpur. She was brought to the limelight after winning the Junior Compound competition at the Archery World Cup 2006. Three years later, she brought home the 2009 Cadel World Championship Title.

In 2010, Deepika won two gold medals at the Delhi Commonwealth games. she was also awarded the Outstanding Performance at CWG Award. Deepika also competed in the 2010 Asian Games. In 2012, Deepika brought home her first World Cup gold medal after defeating Lee Sing-Jin in the final. She was also honored with World no. 1 in Women Recurve Archery.

Deepika could not perform well in the 2012 London Olympics due to poor health. In 2013, the Indian Archer clinched the gold medal in the Archery World Cup in Colombia. In the same year, she bagged the silver medal in the FITA Archery World Cup. In 2014, Deepika was featured in the Forbes ’30 under 30’.

In 2015, Deepika won bronze at the second stage of the World Cup. She also claimed a team silver with Laxmirani Majhi and Rimil Buriuly at the World Championship, Copenhagen. She also won a bronze medal in the 2015 Asian Championships in the Recurve Mixed Team event. In 2016, Deepika competed in the first stage of the World Cup, Shanghai.

She was also a part of the 2016 Rio Olympics team. The Women’s recursive team finished 7th in the ranking. In 2019. Deepika qualified for the Olympic quota at the Continental Qualification Tournament. In 2021, she won 3 gold medals in the Archery’s World Cup Stage 3 tournament, Paris. She is the 11th archer to achieve this in the 15-year history of the Hyundai Archery World Cup.
