Pooja Rani was born on 17th February 1991 in Bhiwani, Haryana. Although she hails from the sport’s cradle of India she had a hard time pursuing boxing as a career. Pooja’s family was firmly against her passion for boxing. During her college days, Pooja participated in inter-college tournaments and bagged silver medals. She then secretly joined Hawa Singh Boxing Academy and trained with Sanjay Kumar Sheoran.

Career
In 2009, Pooja won 3 gold medals in the 5th Youth Women State Boxing Championship held in Faridabad, the 8th Senior Women State Boxing Championship, Bhiwani, and the 4th Senior North Zone Boing Championship, Chandigarh. She also won a silver in the 4th Youth Women National Boxing Championship, Goa that year. In 2010, the pugilist clinched the gold medals at the 9th Senior Women State boxing Championship, Hissar, and the Gold Federation cup held in Nainital, Uttarakhand.
She also won a bronze medal in the 11th Senior Women Thrissur, Kerala. In 2011, Pooja won gold medals in the 10th Senior Women State Boxing, Mahendergarh, and the 34th National Games, Jharkhand. She also bagged the silver medal in the senior women’s National Boxing Championship, Madhya Pradesh.
Pooja also made her international debut that year at the China Open and won the bronze medal. In 2012, she claimed the gold medal in the Senior Women National Boxing Championship, Assam, and a silver medal in the Asian Women Boxing championship, Mongolia. In 2013, Pooja scored her double gold in the Senior Women National Boxing Championship, Uttarakhand, and the Senior Women State Boxing Championship, Hissar.
In the following year, the Haryana boxer represented her country in the Asian Games, Korea and Nations Cup, Serbia, and won bronze medals for both events. In 2015, Pooja won the titles in the Senior Women State Boxing Championship, Rohtak, and the Senior Women National Boxing Championship, Assam. In 2016, Pooja won the gold medal in the 12th South Asian Games, Shillong, and a bronze medal in the 5th Nations Cup, Serbia. In 2019, Pooja won a gold medal at the Asian Boxing Championship. In 2020, she became the first boxer to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
