Birth & Early Life
Sonia Lather was born on 10th February 1992, in the district of Jind, Haryana. Her father, Prem Singh is a farmer and her mother, Nirmal Devi, is a housewife. As a young teenager, Sonia played Kabbadi and Wrestling. She later switched to Boxing to manage her anger. Her father being sports fan-supported her decision. At the age of 16, she began her professional training under Anoop Kumar who was a part of the national boxing camp since 2008.

Sonia’s first career breakthrough was in 2009. She won the Gold medal in the 51 kg fly at the Youth Women National Boxing Championship, Goa. In 2010, she claimed her second gold in Mizoram. In the same year, she clinched gold in the 51 kg fly at the Youth Women Haryana and State Boxing Championships. The Haryana pugilist also won her first national gold at the Federation Cup Women Boxing Championship in Uttarakhand. She bagged a gold at the 2010 Senior Women National Boxing Championship in Kerala.
In 2012, Sonia won her first senior state Gold at the Senior Women Haryana State Boxing Championship held in Yamunanagar. She made her first international victory in the same year by winning a silver medal in the 54 kg at the Asian Women’s World Boxing Championship. In the same year, she competed in the Women’s World Boxing Championship but didn’t qualify for the 2nd round after losing to Germany’s Elena Walendzik. In 2013, Sonia claimed gold in the Senior Women Haryana State Boxing Championship, Haryana. She won a silver medal in the following year at the Senior Women Boxing Competition, Uttarakhand. In 2014, she claimed her champion title in the 13th Senior Women State Boxing Championship, Haryana. She won another gold in the 2015 Senior Women Haryana State Boxing Championships.
In 2016, Lather entered the semi-finals at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship, Kazakstan. However, she lost to Italy’s Alessia Mesiano in the finals, scoring her a silver medal. Sonia claimed the silver in the Asian Women’s Amateur Boxing Championships 2017 in Vietnam. In the same year, Sonia was recommended for the Arjuna Awards by the Boxing Federation of India. She competed in the 2018 Asian Games and lost in her quarter-finals match to Jo Son-Hwa in the 57kg fly. She also represented Railways Sports Promotion Board(RSPB) at the 2018 Senior National Boxing Championships in the 54-57kg fly. Sonia claimed the title after defeating Shashi Chopra of Haryana. In 2020, Sonia entered into the semifinals of Strandja Memorial Boxing.
