Birth & Early Life
Sarita Devi was born in Khunou Thoubal into a farmer family. She was the sixth child of eight children. As a child, she had great stamina and endurance in helping her family out in the field. As a young child, Sarita trained in taekwondo. She used to play sports in local sports meet and Yaoshang (Holi Festival) Sports meet in her childhood. Her dream of becoming a boxer was ignited when she met Dingko Singh, a 1998 Asian Games gold medalist.
She lost her father at the age of 14 and her mother struggled to take care of the family. However, young Sarita did not give up her dream of becoming a boxer. Sarita completed her matriculation in Bal Baidya Mandir and went on to study in an open school to complete her high school to cope with her boxing schedule.

Career
In 1999, Sarita featured in a few of the exhibition matches in the National games. This slowly paved her way to the Indian Team. In 2001, she represented India at the Asian Boxing Championships, Bangkok, and won a silver medal in the Lightweight class. She competed and won many championships in the following years. In 2005, Sarita won the gold medal in the Senior National held in Jamshedpur.
She claimed her second gold of the year in the 3rd Asian Boxing Championship held in Taiwan. In the following year, she bagged the gold medal in the 4th World Women Boxing Championship held in Delhi. In 2007, the Manipuri pugilist competed in the Senior Nationals, Rudrapur, and National Games, Assam, and won two gold medals. In 2008, she competed in the Witch Cup boxing held in Hungary and bagged the silver medal. Sarita was the Asian Boxing Champ winner in the same year.
Sarita represented the All India Police in 2008, 9th Senior Women National Boxing Championships at St John’s Colleg, Agra, and clinched the gold medal. She was honored with the Best Boxer Award. She claimed the second gold of the year in the Federation Cup Women Boxing Championship, Tamil Nadu. She was honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2009 for her outstanding international performance.
In 2010, L. Sarita won the gold medal in the 11th Senior Women National Boxing Championship, Kerala. She was awarded the Best Boxer that year. In 2011 Sarita won a silver at the 34th National games, Jharkhand, and a bronze at the 12th Senior Women National Boxing Championships, Madhya Pradesh. She also won the title in the 3rd Inter-Zonal Women National Boxing Championship, Pondicherry. In 2012, she claimed the gold medal in the Asian Women’s Boxing Championship, Mongolia.
In 2014, Sarita won the silver medal in the Commonwealth Games, Glasgow. She also won a bronze medal in the Asian Games, South Korea. In 2016, she failed to qualify for the Rio Olympics after losing to Victoria Torres. In 2018, she bagged the silver medal at the Indian Open International Championship, New Delhi, and won a gold medal at the Senior National Boxing Championship Rohtak. She also claimed the title in the Women’s World Boxing Championship in her fight against Sandra Diana.
