Washington Sundar was born on 5 October 1999, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His father named him so to honour the man who sponsored his cricket passion. He received his education from St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School.

He made his first-class debut on 6 October 2016, for Tamil Nadu in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy. He started as a batsman just like Ravichandran Ashwin who hails from the same state. Sundar scored a maiden first-class century in 2017, in the Ranji trophy.
Sundar was selected in 2017 by Rising Pune Supergiant for the Indian premier league. He made his Twenty20 debut for Rising Pune Supergiant in the 2017 Indian premier league, he received the man of the match award. He holds the record for impeccable bowling figures.
Sundar was roped by Royal Challengers Bangalore, in the 2018 IPL auction. In October 2018 he was named in India’s Deodhar Trophy.
He made his one-day international on 13 December 2017, against Sri Lanka. He performed exceptionally well in his debut match. On 24 December 2017 he made his Twenty20 international debut against Sri Lanka, at the age of 18 years he became the youngest player to debut in T20I.
He was selected for Nidahas Trophy in against Srilanka and Bangladesh, in March 2018. His spectacular performance was praised by many selectors. By earning a three-wicket haul he became the youngest player to do so in the same series.
He was initially selected as a part of the Australia tour in 2020- 2021 but later due to injury to many players and pandemic, he got the chance to play. He didn’t miss the opportunity to shine as he contributed greatly to an Indian victory.
