Birth & Early Life

Mithali was born o 3rd December 1982 in Rajasthan India. Her father is an IAF Officer and her mother is an instrumental engineer. Mithali became fond of cricket after enrolling with her brother for training at St John’s Academy. Her skill was recognized by her coach at the academy and she encouraged Mithali’s parents to train her at the National Institute of Sports.

Career

At the age of 9, she began playing for the state at the sub-juniors tournament and became the youngest one to do so. Her performance got her promoted to the junior and senior teams. She was selected for the Indian squad for the 1997 World Cup but did not make an appearance. At the age of 17, Mithali made her ODI debut in England and scored 114 runs against Ireland.

In 2002, she played a test match against England and broke Karen Rolton’s record of the world’s highest individual score, scoring 214 runs. In 2005, she played for the team and led them to the finals of the World Cup only to lose against Australia. In 2006, Mithali helped her team achieve their first-ever victory in the Test Series, England.

In 2013, Mithali ranked as the No. 1 cricketer in the ODI chart. In 2017, she became the second player to score above 5000 runs in WODIs. She also led the Indian team to the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup. The team lost to England by 9 runs. In 2018, she was selected for the squad to play at the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 tournament, West Indies. In 2019, Mithali retired from T20I cricket. However, she never stopped working to bring the World Cup to her country.

In the same year, she was appointed as the batting consultant for India Women’s national cricket team. In 2020, she was nominated for the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Award for ICC Female Cricketer of the decade. In 2021, Mithali was named the captain of the India Test squad for the one-off against England.
