Birth & Early Life
Jyoti Gulia was born on 5th December 2001, in a small village called Rukri located in Haryana. She comes from a conservative farmer family who was initially against her choice of career. In 2013, when a boy in her village was appreciated for winning at the district level, Jyoti made it her goal to gain the same praise from her villagers.
With her mother’s support, she began training in secret with Sudhir Hooda, coach-cum-sarpanch of her village. Eventually, her family found out and was not happy with Jyoti’s decision. However, they came to a decision that Jyoti would quit boxing if she did not win gold in her upcoming tournament.
Jyoti Gulia won her first medal in the 2013 PYKKA Nationals. She won two golds in the 2014 and 2015 editions and became the National school champion in 46kg.

In 2017, Gulia became the national Youth champion in 48 kg. In the same year, she bagged the gold medal in the Youth World Championship held in Serbia. She also won the bronze medal in the Ahmet Comert Championship held in Turkey. She joined a Boxing camp and trained under Vijay Hooda and Raffael Bergamasco. In 2018, Jyoti was the only Indian boxer to qualify for the Youth Olympic game held in Argentina. However, she lost her quarterfinals match to Italy’s Martina La Piana. In the same year, she clinched the gold medal in the 14th Silesian Youth Women’s Boxing Championship held in Poland and a silver in the Golden Glove Tournament.
In 2019, Jyoti strikes gold in her first Senior National Women’s Boxing championship. She bagged the bronze medal in the 2019 Elite International Competition. In the same year, she won the 13the Women’s All India Railway Boxing Championship gold and was honored with the best boxer award. On August 31st, she was declared a Sport-wise athlete. She claimed the gold medal in 2019, the 4th Elite national Women’s Boxing Championship. In 2020 she won silver in the 64th Boshak Memorial Tournament. At the 72nd Strandja Memorial Tournament 2021 held in Bulgaria, the Haryana pugilist entered the quarter-finals. She lost the game against Romania’s Perijoc Lacramioara.
