Gary Payton was born on 1st December 1992, in Washinton to Monique and Gary Payton. His father was a member of the basketball team, Seattle Supersonic. Gary attended Spring Valley High School, Las Vegas where he took part in the basketball team for two years and swimming for one year. He graduated in 2011 and enrolled at Westwind Preparatory Academy, Phoenix Arizona.
In 2012, he joined Salt Lake Community College and played in their basketball team, Salt Lake Bruins for two seasons. He led the team to victory in the Scenic West Athletic Conference(SWAC) and won the Region 18 Championship. Gary was named First Team All SWAC. In 2014, he earned Second Team NJCAA Divison I All- American after scoring an average of 14.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.9 steals. He was also voted 2014 Region 18 Co-Player and Region 18 Tournament Most Valuable Player. His team won their second Region 18 Championship that year.
In 2014, Gary signed a patent to play for Oregon State. It was his father’s alma mater. His team, Oregon Beavers finished 7th against the conference top teams, Arizona, Oregon, Utah. He became the second Beaver ever with a triple-double after playing against Grambling State. The first one to achieve this milestone was his father in 1988. In 2015, Gary was named Pac-12 Conference Player of the Week. In the same year, he was voted All-Pac-12 First Team, All-Pac 2 Defensive Team, and the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. In 2016, he became one of the finalists for the Bob Cousy Award for the top point guard of the year. He was also named on the watchlist of Naismith Player of the Year.

Career
In 2016, he was undrafted on the NBA list. He joined the Houston Rockets for the 22016 NBA Summer League. He scored 51 points in a win over Los Angeles D-Fenders. In 2017, he signed a contract with Milwaukee Bucks and made his debut on April 2nd. In 2018, He signed a contract with Los Angeles Lakers and scored a career-high 25 points against Los Angeles Clippers. In 2019, Payton signed a contract with Washington Wizards and made his debut on January 22.
On October 24th he was traded to South Bay Lakers. He returned to the Wizards for the 2019-20 season but couldn’t play due to a positive COVID result. In 2021, Payton was selected by the Raptors 905 in the NBA G League draft. He scored an average of 10.8 points. At the end of the season, he was named the 2021 Defensive Player of the Year. In the same year, he signed a contract with Golden State Warriors and played with the team for the rest of the season.
