Birth and Early Life
Riya was born on 1st September 1998 in Kolkata. Her father, Indrajeet Mookerjee is the 1983 Asian Badminton championship bronze medalist. Riya started playing badminton at the age of 11, training in her local club. Later she was coached by her father and the late Badal Bhattacharjee in Babu Banarasi Das Badminton Academy in Lucknow.

Career
In 2010, 12-year-old Riya played in the 10th united Indian Insurance RSC all India junior ranking badminton tournament 2010 pre-quarters. 2011, she played in the U-17 category All India Junior ranking badminton tournament. In 2012, Riya bagged the sub-Junior crown and won bronze medals in 2015 and 2016 editions. She trained in Uttar Pradesh Badminton Academy, Lucknow.
In 2013, Riya played in the 100 plus badminton Asia youth u19 individual championship and Sushant Chipalkatti Memorial India Junior International Badminton Championship. She also participated in the 2014 edition of the latter. In 2015, the young shuttler qualified for the Syed Modi Internation badminton Championship.
She also battled in the 2016 and 2017 editions. In the same year, she played in Yonex German and Dutch International challenges. She also qualified for Yonex Sunrise India Open 2015. She also played in 2016, 2017, and 2018 editions.
Riya bagged the silver medal in the Tata Open India International Challenge 2017. In 2018 she competed in the Yonex Swiss Open and Finnish Open. She claimed the tile in the Lagos International Challenge 2018 Women’s Singles. She also qualified in the Yonex Dutch Open 2018 women’s Singles.
In 2019 she entered the Austrian open Main draw. In the same year, she lost in the Swiss open Women’s singles quarterfinal. The UP shuttler represented the Railways in the 83rd Yonex Sunrise Senior National Badminton Championship 2019 and won the pre-quarterfinals. She trained under Suchitra Badminton Academy, Hyderabad. She qualified for the women’s singles quarterfinals of the Chinese Taipei Open 2019 and the women’s doubles India International challenge 2019.
In 2020, the junior Mookerjee played in the 55th Portuguese International Championship Women’s Singles. She bagged bronze medals in All senior Ranking Women’s Singles which were held in Goa and Bareilly.
