Career
In 2003, Tarun made his international debut at the Asian Archery Championship, Myanmar. In the same year, he represented the Indian Archery team and finished fourth at the world championships in New York. In 2004, the archer won his first gold medal at the Asian Grand Prix, Bangkok. This qualified him for the 2004 Athens Olympics. He finished 43rd in the men’s individual recurve event.
In 2005, Tarundeep played for the Indian team at the Asian archery championship, New Delhi, and settled for the bronze medal. He also won a silver medal at the World Championships, Madrid that year. He was also honored with the Arjuna Award in 2005.
In 2006, Tarun along with Jayanta Talukdar, Mangal Singh, and Viswash won the bronze medal in the recurve team event at the Asian Games, Doha. After experiencing a shoulder injury in 2007 he had given up competing in the 2008 Olympics.
Tarun made his glorious comeback in 2009, clinching the silver medal in the individual event and gold medal in the team event at the Asian Grand Prix, Iran. In 2010, he became the first Indian archer to win the individual silver medal at the Asian Games. In the same year, he claimed the gold medal in the Archery World Cup, China. In 2012, he was selected for the London Olympics and finished 17th in the individual event and 9th in the team event.
In 2019, Tarundeep won the team silver medal at the World Archery Championship in the Netherlands. This win helped India book a berth at the Tokyo Olympics. In 2020, he was presented the Padma Shri. In 2021, he declared that he would retire from the archery world after the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
