Career
Sunil began his professional career in 2002 with Mohun Bagan Athletic Club at the National Football League. He scored four goals and his club finished 7th. In the 2003-04 season, the striker scored 2 goals and brought his club to the 9th rank. In the 2004-05 season, which was his last game with Mohun Bagan, he scored and his club finished 8th in the League.
In 2005, Sunil joined Jahathit Cotton and Textile Football Club (JCT FC). He made his club debut in the 2005-06 season and scored 3 goals and placed 6th. In the 2006-07 season, he scored 11 goals and progressed to second place. In 2007, he scored 7 goals in the first season of the I-League and his club bagged the third rank. In the same year, Sunil was awarded the AIFF Player of the Year. In 2009, he signed a 2-year contract with Dempo, an I-league club. He also signed a 3-year contract with the English Football League Championship side Queens Park Rangers that year. However, he was denied a work permit as India was not in the top 70 in FIFA World Ranking. In 2010, the Indian League captain signed with the Kansas City Wizards of the Major League Soccer.
He made his debut in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. However, his team lost the match to Colorado Rapids. In 2010, his team played a friendly match against Manchester United and won the match by 2-1. In the following year, Sunil was chosen for the Indian National Team.
- In 2011, he signed with Chirag United and played the 2010-11 season. In July, he signed a 1-year contract with Mohun Bagan.
- In 2012, Chhetri signed a 2-year contract with Sporting CP. In 2013, he was loaned out to the Churchill Brothers and the remainder of the season. He helped the team win their second I League title that year.
