Ashwin was born on September 8, 1990, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. As a child, he was brilliant in his studies but he started playing cricket. He scored ninety-plus in the twelfth standard. He graduated from Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering in Chennai.

- Domestic career-
Ashwin started playing cricket at an early age, when he was in his school, Santhome Higher Secondary School, Chennai, and then DAV Public School. He made his List A debut on 11 December 2015 in Vijay Hazare Trophy, 2015. He made his T-20 debut for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on 2 January 2016 against Haryana. In this trophy, he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker for Tamil Nadu.
He was bought by Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016, and he performed exceptionally for them. In 2018 he was roped in by Royal Challengers Bangalore where he didn’t get to play. He was picked by Kings XI Punjab for INR 20 lakhs ahead of IPL 2019, he didn’t play well but they retained him next year also.
