Vikas Thakur was born on 14 November 1993 in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. At the age nine his father Brij Lal Thakur has inspired him to make the career in the sports field. Vikas’s father is an government employed in Indian Railway now currently working in Mail Express Guard.
Vikas’ coach was Parvesh Chander Sharma they guided Vikas for weightlifting. He do practice in Ludhiana district Weightlifting. Now, his coach is Vijay Sharma and Sandeep Kumar at the National Institute of Sports, Patiala.

Career
Vikas Thakur was first participated in 2013 at Commonwealth Champion, in this he lifted 322kg and won the silver medal and Richie Patterson lifted 343kg win the gold medal. After that, he was the part of the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and lifted 150kg in snatch and 183kg in clean & Jerk and won the silver medal. In 2015 again he was the part of Commonwealth Championships in which he won Gold medal by lifting 335 kg in the category of 85kg.
In 2017 Commonwealth Championship, he won the bronze medal in 94kg category by lifting 340kg and lost the gold medal by Steven Kari (Guinea). He later won the bronze medal in 2018 Commonwealth Games in 94kg category by lifting 351kg.
In 2019 in the Commonwealth Championship in the 96kg category he won the silver medal by lifting 338kg. After that again in Commonwealth Championship 2021 in that he won bronze medal by lifting 339kg. Now, in 2022 in Commonwealth Games in 96kg category he won the silver medal by lifting 346kg.
