JB Somers is an American Singer and Songwriter. He is best known for competing on Season 23 of NBC’s singing reality show “The Voice”. The show is coached by Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, Chance the Rapper and Niall Horan. He is originally from Montgomery, Alabama.
Family
Somers’ life growing up in rural Alabama was deeply entrenched in the evangelical church. From being a worship leader in the youth group, singing in the choir loft and attending Montgomery Academy – the same school his mother had gone to – his faith was an integral part of his life.
However, in 2016, after the tragic death of his sister Somer Johnson due to a drug overdose, he decided to pursue music as a career.
With a heavy heart, he embarked on a new journey and eventually ended up in Nashville to start anew. Despite experiencing immense heartache over the last few years, Somers has embraced the city of Nashville and made it his home for the past two years.
Early Life
Somers shared that, he was drawn to a life in music from singing in church. His dream was solidified when he was in his 20s and decided to pursue writing songs more seriously.
To channel inspiration, he looked to artists like Hozier, Sam Smith, Brooke Ligertwood, and especially Joni Mitchell. According to Somers, Mitchell’s music pushed him to create pieces with more content and meaning.
Career
Somers released his debut single “There For Me” in April 2022 after moving to Nashville He later comes out as a gay artist. In the same month, he discussed his experience as a queer artist in the music industry with New Scene Magazine.
“It’s awesome and scary. I’m thankful to not have to hide that part of myself anymore. I feel like now I can write about every aspect of my life and bring songs to people that are more honest than ever before. I will say sometimes I struggle with feeling like I’m not “gay enough” for the industry. No one has made me feel that way just my own insecurities. Overall I’m just thankful to have a space to be my full self and make music!”
In September 2022, he released “Build This Love,” and became one of many Season 23 contestants on The Voice.
